Many cultures and chefs like it hot in the kitchen and serve their food with some “heat”. Our hot pepper board represents the perfect shape to highlight your style and emphasize your appetizer, side, or entree, or, however, you choose to use this powerful image. So, as the phrase goes, “If you can’t handle the “heat, then get out of the kitchen”.

Note: There are over one hundred and fifty hot peppers types and each one has a distinct flavor that is all its own. Hot chili peppers range from 100,001 to 350,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). There are many varieties of hot chili peppers, and they each have different names depending on the region in which they are grown.

FYI: Bell peppers are considered a sweet pepper with no heat. They are excellent sources of vitamins A, C, and B-6. Next is the Ancho Chili Pepper or a Poblano pepper which are essentially the same. The Ancho is just a dried Poblano with the Ancho Chili pepper scoring between 1,000 to 2,500 SHU. The Poblano reaches 2,500 a maximum of 2,500 SHU. The Poblano is a mild chili pepper although the red one can be hotter than its younger green version. Ancho chilies are credited with Vitamin A and C, as well as Calcium and Iron. The Poblano pepper has vitamins A, D, c, and B-12, along with Iron and Magnesium. Now the most well known and used pepper is the Jalapeno which measures anywhere between 2,500 to 10,000 SHU. The red jalapeno is a bit milder than the sweeter green. They are milder than the Serrano pepper. Jalapeno peppers are a source of vitamins A, D, B-12, C, and B6.

Serrano peppers are just the smaller relative of the Jalapeno and measure 10,000 to 25,000 SHU. They vary in color from yellow, green, and orange, to red and brown, and contain the same nutritional benefits as the Jalapeno.

Onto the Cayenne pepper, or cow-horn pepper; Guinea spice, red hot chili pepper, aleva, bird pepper, or, also known as the red pepper, measures anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 SHU. This pepper supposedly reduces acidity in the body and lowers high cholesterol. Cayenne peppers have also been reported to alleviate the pain of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and work as a remedy for fibromyalgia. Cayenne pepper contains Vitamin C, B-6, E, potassium, and manganese.

Habaneros are a smaller pepper but beware as they measure between 100,000 to 350,000 on the SHU. Be careful as this pepper is for hot sauces and authentic spicy foods. They can be found in several colors, but most commonly are orange and red. The Habanero contains Vitamin C and potassium. They have a high capsaicin content, which is a natural anti-inflammatory.

These are some of the most commonly known pepper varieties and their heat intensity.

FYI: the hottest pepper on record is the Carolina Reaper which measures between 1,569,383 to 2,200,000 SHU. Only eat with extreme caution!
